Windows 10 motion activity detection can help you keep track of your fitness goals. To do this, Windows and third-party apps and services have to know your device motion data to provide you with health or fitness data, like how many steps you’ve taken or how long you were active.

Whenever we collect data, we want to make sure it’s the right choice for you. In this case, some people worry about an app or device collecting their motion data because it might be tied to their location, or because it’s part of their health history. That’s why we provide options, like the controls described on this page. For more details about the data we’re collecting, we recommend reviewing this section of our Privacy Statement.

How it works

When motion data detection is on, Windows collects the device’s motion activity. Then, when you want your pedometer to count the number of steps you take, or a fitness app to estimate how many calories you burn, it’s ready: it gives you that info at the right time.

How we help keep your data safe

Motion data collected by Windows is stored on your device for up to 30 days, then it’s deleted. If you give them permission, other apps and services can also access and use that info.

How you control the motion data Windows 10 collects

To clear motion data already collected:

  1. Select Start , and then select Settings > Privacy > Motion.

  2. Select Clear History to clear the motion data history on your device.

  3. Note: If another app accessed this data before you deleted it, the data may be stored elsewhere, and you should check your app’s privacy policies for more detailed info.

To stop motion data detection:

  1. Select Start , and then select Settings > Privacy > Motion.

  2. Under Choose which apps can use your motion data, turn off the app that you don’t want to use your motion data.
